The Wealden Crematorium in Horam was developed and will be operated by Wealden District Council.
In the past the residents of Heathfield have always had to travel outside the District to attend cremations. As pressure on these services grows, there is an increasing need for local families and friends to be able to mourn their loved ones in an unhurried, peaceful setting, without the additional stress of travelling long distances.
The new Wealden Crematorium is a modern, multi-faith facility is located south of Horam, along the A267. On entering the grounds, the short drive through the landscaped grounds will provide the opportunity for a horse drawn hearse to make the final journey to the Chapel if required. The 160 space car park is close by and includes 10 accessible car parking spaces and 10 cycle spaces.
The Chapel is a light, spacious building, suitable for all denominations, and none. It boasts a 120 seats and will provide much needed provision for the 1,200 local people each year who choose to be cremated. The full length glass wall on the south side looks out over the reflection pool to the Flower Court and the Garden of Remembrance. The glass wall on the north side looks out on to an enclosed garden. The acoustic design, electric organ and built-in audio visual equipment will ensure that a wide range of service requirements can be met.
The landscaped Garden of Remembrance, next to the Crematorium, offers a suitable place for memorial plaques. A separate antechamber houses a Book of Remembrance, which can also be accessed online. Both the Garden of Remembrance and the antechamber will be open at weekends.
The crematorium is much needed and Axell-Eames welcome the new facilities, especially as we continue to see an increase in population for the surrounding areas. As a local, independent, family-run business, we see this as a positive step towards reducing funeral costs for our customers.
